A Fall of Marigolds

2014 · Susan Meissner · Historical fiction (adult, dual timeline)

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 15+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A clean, gentle novel about grief and the courage to love again. Clara and Taryn both blame themselves for deaths they could not stop, and both learn that the risk of love is worth it. Clara faces a hard choice about telling a painful truth. The reservation: God is wondered about but never met, God's name is misused a few times, and destiny does the work grace should do.

For parents

Not a read-aloud. Independent reading from 15; it is an adult novel with no publisher age. The 9/11 and Triangle fire scenes may be hard for some readers. Ask whether Clara should have told Andrew the truth. Ask how God's providence differs from fate (CCC 302), and how we grieve with hope.
