A Life of Our Lord for Children

1939 · Marigold Hunt · Catholic children's life of Christ

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is the Gospel told straight to a child by a woman who believed every word of it. Hunt explains the hard parts instead of skipping them, and she shows Jesus as God and King, not only as a kind teacher. Mater Amabilis builds a two-year religion course on it. One reservation: no outside source logs how the Passion is described, so preview those chapters for a tender child.

For parents

Read aloud from 6 or 7, independent reading from about 8 or 9. Mater Amabilis paces it at three pages a week. Ask your child to tell each episode back in his own words. Ask why Jesus let Himself suffer when He could have stopped it (CCC 609).
