A Nest for Celeste
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
A gentle, beautifully drawn story about friendship, home and mercy toward small creatures. Celeste is brave and kind, and Joseph is a good friend. The book shows plainly that Audubon hurt the birds he painted, and it asks a child to feel for them. The reservation: a woodpecker is killed, birds are pinned and caged, and Celeste fears death, so sensitive little ones may need you close by.
For parents
Read it aloud from 6; independent reading from 8. Kirkus says 6 to 10, Booklist grades 2 to 5. Ask why Celeste is upset with Audubon. God gave us animals to care for, and we may use them, but cruelty is wrong (CCC 2416-2418). Ask what makes a place feel like home.
