A Wrinkle in Time

1962 · Madeleine L'Engle · Science fantasy

Caution. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A brave, loving story where a girl defeats mind control by loving her brother. It quotes Scripture and treats evil as real. But when the heroes name Earth's great fighters against the dark, Jesus is listed beside Buddha, Gandhi and great artists as one among many. That is a false picture of Christ for young readers, and a crystal-ball medium is shown as harmless.

For parents

Read aloud from 8, independent reading from 10. Common Sense Media says 9 and up; Kolbe places it in fifth grade. Stop at the list of fighters against the darkness. Ask: is Jesus one good teacher among many, or the Light Himself (John 1:9)? Ask why Meg's love beats IT when anger cannot.
