Adventures with Waffles

2005 · Maria Parr · Children's family novel (translated from Norwegian)

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is a funny, tender book about friendship, family and grief. Trille's home is whole and loving, Lena's longing for a father is treated as good, and a picture of Jesus the Good Shepherd comforts both children after a death. The reservation: in one rescue the children and Grandpa tell a string of lies, and Grandpa says white lies are sometimes fine. Correct that one.

For parents

Read aloud from 6, independent reading from 8. Kirkus says 8 to 11. Auntie Granny dies midway, and there is some farm-yard potty humor. Ask why Lena wanted a father so much. When Grandpa says white lies are fine, ask what else they could have done (CCC 2482-2485). Ask why Trille keeps Auntie Granny's picture.
