All-of-a-Kind Family

1951 · Sydney Taylor · Middle-grade historical family fiction

Recommended. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A warm, gentle classic about a poor family rich in love and in faith. The sisters obey their parents, share what little they have, and keep the Sabbath and the feasts with joy. This is a believing family drawn with respect, and it shows children what a home ordered to God looks like. There is nothing here to worry about. The only work for a Catholic parent is to explain how the faith of Israel leads to Christ.

For parents

Read aloud from 6, independent reading from 8. Common Sense Media says 8 and up. A lovely first chapter book for the whole family. Ask why the girls are happy when they have so little. Ask what the Sabbath meal has to do with our Sunday Mass, and why Jesus kept these same feasts.
