Andrei Rublev

1966 · Andrei Tarkovsky · Historical drama

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 17+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Few films take faith and sacred art this seriously. Andrei sees the worst men can do, sins himself, does penance in silence, and returns to paint for God and his people. It is Russian Orthodox, not Catholic, in setting. The honest reservation is the content: a naked pagan rite, brutal killing, and a horse really killed on camera.

For parents

For adults and mature older teens, watched with a parent. It runs three hours with subtitles. Preview the pagan rite and the sack of Vladimir. Ask: why does Andrei stop painting, and what brings him back? How can beauty serve God in a cruel age? Was it right to harm animals for a film?
