Anne of Green Gables
Recommended. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Anne is one of the great heroines for girls. She arrives unwanted and learns to pray, to apologize, to work hard and to forgive. She ends by giving up her own plans to care for Marilla. The faith on the page is warm and Protestant. Montgomery pokes fun at stiff religion, so a Catholic parent should add what real prayer is.
For parents
Read aloud from 8. Independent reading from 10 or 11. Ask why Anne gives up her scholarship at the end and whether that was a loss. Ask what Anne gets wrong about prayer at first and what Mrs. Allan teaches her. Marilla speaks slightingly of French farm boys and Italian peddlers. Say plainly that this is wrong.
