Caddie Woodlawn

1935 · Carol Ryrie Brink · Historical fiction

Recommended. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Caddie is brave, truthful and quick to defend the mistreated, and the book's heart is her growth into a woman of character. The family prays and welcomes the circuit preacher. The reservation is the 1935 portrait of Native Americans. Caddie's friendship is real, but the wording is dated and needs a parent's frame.

For parents

Read aloud from 8, independent reading from 9 or 10. Explain beforehand that the book's words for Indians are from 1935. Ask why the neighbors believed the massacre rumor. Ask what Caddie's father means by a woman's strength.
