Caleb's Story

2001 · Patricia MacLachlan · Historical family fiction (Sarah, Plain and Tall series)

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

The third Sarah, Plain and Tall book is about forgiveness, the hard kind. A father who walked out comes home, and his son does not want him. Sarah gently urges mercy, and a boy's kindness opens the door. It is short, quiet and true about families. The one small reservation is that the forgiveness rests on human goodness, with no word of God.

For parents

Read aloud from 6, independent reading from 8. Kirkus says 8 to 10. A world war and influenza sit in the background. Ask why Papa finds it so hard to forgive his father. Ask what Jesus says about forgiving seventy times seven (Matthew 18:22; CCC 2843).
