The Carrot Seed

1945 ยท Ruth Krauss ยท Picture book

Recommended. Age: 5+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A little boy plants a carrot seed. Everyone in his family says it will not grow. He keeps pulling weeds and watering it, and one day a giant carrot comes up. It is a tiny picture of hope and patient work, kept up when everyone else doubts. Nothing in it needs correcting.

For parents

Age 5+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; no Common Sense Media or publisher age was found. Read it aloud from 2. Ask why the boy kept watering when everyone said no. Then plant a seed together and pray while you wait.
