Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Charlie is a poor, kind boy who finds a golden ticket to Willy Wonka's secret chocolate factory. Four greedy children go in with him, and each one gets into trouble because of a bad habit. Charlie stays honest and wins a big surprise. The book rewards humility and punishes greed and rudeness, but Wonka treats the punishments as a joke. Age 9, set by the publisher's 9-12 range (as reported by Common Sense Media, whose own age is 6+) and matching Lumen's own independent age.
For parents
Age 9, set by the publisher's 9-12 range as reported on Common Sense Media; Common Sense Media's own age is 6+. Read it aloud from 6. Talk about Wonka's amusement at the children's trouble and whether the punishments fit. Mention that the Oompa-Loompas are drawn differently in the 1964 and 1973 editions, and the 2023 Puffin edition made further wording changes. Common Sense Media notes brand-name candy and a joke about Oompa-Loompas getting drunk.
