Our review

Jim Braddock is a boxer who loses everything when hard times come. His family is hungry and cold, so he goes back into the ring to feed them. He keeps winning and gets a chance to fight the champion. It is a moving story of a faithful husband and father, but the boxing is bloody and the language is rough. The one age is 14, set by Common Sense Media; the MPAA says PG-13 and we found no Catholic classification.

For parents

One age: 14, set by Common Sense Media. The MPAA rating is PG-13; we could not find a Catholic classification. Common Sense and Kids-In-Mind both describe intense boxing with bloody injuries, a fighter who dies after a bout, and police beating people at a shantytown (Kids-In-Mind violence 6 of 10). Plugged In counts God's name misused more than a dozen times, Jesus' name misused more often, a few s-words and 50-plus milder profanities; Max Baer is shown in a bedroom with two women and makes crude taunts about Mae. Plugged In also lists a priest praying for Jim with his parish, the sign of the cross, and Mae's prayers. Correct one thing: Jim says he is "all prayed out" (per Catholic Exchange). Tell teens that God does not tire of our prayers, and that despair is the real danger in hard times. Talk about it: Why does Jim pay back the relief money? Is it right to fight for a living when the goal is to hurt the other man?
