Our review

Gru is a bad guy who wants to steal the Moon. He adopts three girls only to use them in his plan. But he comes to love them, and he saves them when they are kidnapped. A selfish man is changed by love for three children, and that is a good story. Villainy and theft are played for fun, and the adoption starts as a scheme, so parents should talk it through. The one age is 6, set by Common Sense Media. Expect cartoon guns, a kidnapping and potty jokes.

For parents

The one age is 6, set by Common Sense Media. The Church's A-I would allow younger, and the MPA rates it PG. Expect cartoon guns and explosions, a kidnapping, crude potty jokes, and a cruel orphanage director who locks a girl in a box. Gru adopts the girls to use them, which is wrong, and stealing is played for laughs. But love changes him. Ask: why did Gru change? What did the girls give him that the Moon could not? Talk about adoption as a real, lasting gift, not a trick, since Common Sense Media says the film leans on bad adoption stereotypes.
