Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective

1963 ยท Donald J. Sobol ยท Short-story mysteries

Acceptable. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Encyclopedia Brown is a ten-year-old boy in Idaville who solves mysteries. He charges a quarter for each case. Every chapter gives you a clue so you can try to solve it too. A clean, clever book where crime does not pay and the boy detective is honest and fair. Nothing for a parent to correct. Age 8, set by the publisher range cited by Common Sense Media (Common Sense Media itself says 7+).

For parents

Age 8, set by the publisher range of 8 to 12 that Common Sense Media reports (Common Sense Media's own age is 7+). Read it aloud from 6. Crimes include theft and swindling, always solved. Ask why the bully Bugs Meany keeps getting caught.
