Evil Under the Sun

1941 · Agatha Christie · Detective mystery (Hercule Poirot)

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 15+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Poirot says plainly that evil is real and is found everywhere under the sun, and he hunts the truth until two cold killers are exposed. Murder for money is shown as wicked. The reservations are real. A flirtation between married people drives the story. A girl of sixteen tries a death spell with a wax figure, then tries to kill herself. The spell does nothing, and she is glad she lived.

For parents

Not a read-aloud. Independent reading from 15. The spell does nothing, but Poirot calls it a harmless outlet. Tell your teen that trying to harm by magic is a grave sin even when it fails (CCC 2117). Ask why Linda despaired, and what she should have done with her guilt instead of taking the tablets.
