Fantastic Mr. Fox
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Mr. Fox promised his wife he would stop stealing chickens. But he cannot help it and steals from three mean farmers. The farmers come after all the animals, and Mr. Fox has to save everyone. It is clever and funny, but the hero's stealing is the fun, and it puts every animal in danger. Mr. Fox owns his pride, and his son grows, so there is good here to point to. Children need a parent to name the theft as wrong. The one age is 7, set by Common Sense Media's 7+; no Catholic rating was found. Expect guns, a shot-off tail, a knife-wielding rat and a rabid dog.
For parents
One age: 7, set by Common Sense Media's 7+ (MPAA PG; no Catholic classification found). The big thing to correct: Mr. Fox's stealing is played as a fun caper, and he breaks his promise to his wife. His pride brings ruin on all the animals. Common Sense notes farmers trying to kill him with guns, explosives and flooding, a tail shot off as a trophy, a knife-wielding rat, a rabid dog, hard cider and wine, and pipes and cigarettes. Swearing is replaced by the word 'cuss.' Talk about it: Was Mr. Fox right to steal? Who paid for his choices? How did Kristofferson forgive Ash?
