Five Little Pigs

1942 · Agatha Christie · Detective mystery

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 14+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is Christie at her best, and the moral heart is sound. Truth matters, even sixteen years late, and a daughter is set free by it. Adultery is shown as the selfish thing it is, and it destroys a home. The reservation is the ending. The killer walks away unpunished, and an innocent woman chose silence and prison as penance for an old sin.

For parents

Not a read-aloud. Independent reading from 14. The plot turns on a husband's affair, a poisoning and a wrongful conviction, all told without graphic detail. Ask why Caroline kept silent, and whether taking false blame is true atonement. Ask what Elsa means when she says she is the one who died.
