The Flowers of St. Francis
Recommended. Age: All ages. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Rossellini and Fellini filmed the Little Flowers with real Franciscan friars, and it shows. Francis is not a hippie or a holy fool here. He is the wise, Christlike father of a band of joyful, clumsy brothers. Brother Ginepro's trip to the tyrant's camp is the heart of it: foolishness for Christ disarms a violent man. Nothing here needs correcting. Only the subtitles and the slow pace ask patience.
For parents
Fine for all ages; the only rough moment is the tyrant's men knocking Brother Ginepro around. Ask: why does Francis send the brothers out by spinning until they fall? Talk about holy foolishness, obedience, and finding Christ in the leper (CCC 2447 on the works of mercy).
