Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

The mice work hard to store food for winter. Frederick says he is storing sunlight, colors and words. When the food runs low and the mice are cold and bored, Frederick shares what he saved, and they call him a poet. It shows that beauty and words feed the heart too, and that every gift is meant to be shared. Recommended at +4. One age: 6+, set by Lumen's read-alone age (Common Sense Media says 4+, the publisher 3 to 7).

For parents

Age 6+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; Common Sense Media says 4+ and the publisher 3 to 7. Read it aloud from 4. Ask whether Frederick was lazy or doing real work. Talk about how both bread and beauty are gifts from God, and how the mice needed each other.
