Gandhi

1982 ยท Richard Attenborough ยท Biography

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Gandhi was a lawyer from India. He fought unfair laws without hitting anyone back. He helped India become free, but he was killed at the end. This is a great film about peaceful courage against injustice. It is violent in places and it presents all religions as roughly the same path, which a Catholic parent should gently correct. The one age is 13, set by Lumen's own call because of the massacre and Partition killings.

For parents

Best for 13 and up. Lumen's own call sets the age; Common Sense Media says 12+, and no Catholic classification was found. The Amritsar massacre and Partition riots are hard to watch. Talk about Gandhi's real courage and his refusal to hate. Then make one thing clear: the film shows Gandhi embracing every faith, but we believe Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Ask: how can we answer an injustice without hate?
