Acceptable with guidance. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This long movie shows the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. We follow soldiers and generals from both the North and the South. Many men die, and the film shows why they fought. It is a serious history lesson with real courage in it. The one age is 13, set by Lumen's own judgment of the battle violence (Kids-In-Mind violence 5 of 10); the MPAA says PG and no other age source was available.

For parents

One age: 13, set by Lumen's own judgment of the violence. The MPAA is PG per Kids-In-Mind, and we could not fetch Common Sense Media. Kids-In-Mind scores sex 0, language 1 and violence 5 of 10: many men are shot, bayoneted or blown up, fields of dead are shown, and a field hospital is described frankly, with little blood. The film portrays both sides as fighting for what they believed in; Kids-In-Mind lists slavery as a discussion topic. Talk about it: Was the cause of the South just? What does Chamberlain's courage ask of a man? Note it runs over four hours, so watch it in two sittings.
