Harold and the Purple Crayon
Acceptable. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Harold is a little boy with a purple crayon. Everything he draws becomes real, so he draws a moon, a path, a boat, a picnic and a balloon. When he gets sleepy, he draws his own window and bed and goes to sleep. It is a clean, clever book about imagination and keeping your head when things go wrong. It does not form much beyond that, and nothing needs correcting. Age 6+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; HarperCollins says 4 to 8 and Common Sense says 2+, so read it aloud from 3.
For parents
Age 6+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; HarperCollins says 4 to 8 and Common Sense Media says 2+. Read it aloud from 3. The crayon is make-believe, not magic power to take seriously. A drawn dragon scares Harold for a moment. Ask how Harold got out of each trouble, and hand your child a crayon.
