Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Caution. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
The virtues are there: Harry's courage, Ron's sacrifice on the chessboard, a mother's love as the one shield evil cannot pass. Evil is evil, and the magic never calls on spirits. Still, this is not Oz. Witchcraft is a craft, taught in classrooms, and it is the hero's identity. Add rules broken and rewarded, and Catholics have argued about it for good reason. Parents decide, eyes open.
For parents
Kids about eight and up, with a parent who has decided. Say plainly: real witchcraft is a sin against the first commandment (CCC 2117); this is make-believe, and we do not blur the two. Ask why Harry's flying stunt earned a prize instead of a consequence. The troll and Quirrell's death frighten little ones.
