Hattie Ever After

2013 · Kirby Larson · Middle-grade historical fiction

Recommended. Age: 12+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A clean, well-researched story about a young woman who works hard, tells the truth and keeps praying. Hattie quotes Scripture, asks God for help and prays hard for a sick child, and she learns from her mistakes without bitterness. The romance is sweet and stays chaste. The one reservation is light: a little teasing about her pious aunt and a passing interest in omens.

For parents

Read aloud from 10, independent reading from 12. Common Sense Media says 10 and up; Plugged In says 12. Reading Hattie Big Sky first helps. Ask how Hattie decided between a career and marriage, and whether she had to choose. Ask why telling a story true matters, and how honesty is a kind of love.
