Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison

1957 · John Huston · War drama

Recommended. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

A man and a woman alone on an island, and nothing wrong happens. She keeps faith with her calling. He loves her, fails once when drunk, repents, and then risks his life for others. Chastity looks strong here, not sad. The reservation is that the film understands the Marine better than the nun, and her vocation is never really explained.

For parents

Best for teens and up. The Marine kills an enemy soldier with a knife, and in one scene he is drunk and speaks bitterly about her vows. Ask: why does Sister Angela say no when no one would ever know? How does Allison show love after she refuses him?
