Henry and the Chalk Dragon
Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
A silly, sweet school adventure about a boy whose drawing comes alive. Under the slapstick is a good lesson: our gifts are meant to be shared, and it takes courage to show people what we make. Friends and kind grownups help Henry grow. The magic is make-believe with no occult in it. The one reservation is that reviewers find the lesson told more than shown.
For parents
Read it aloud from 6; a child can read it alone from 8. Kirkus says 8 to 12. Story Warren says families enjoy it together. Ask why Henry hid his drawings. Ask what gifts God has given your child, and whom they are for (CCC 1937). A box of chalk afterward is a good idea.
