Our review
In 1961, three Black women work as math experts at NASA. They face unfair rules because of their race, but they keep working hard. Their math helps astronaut John Glenn fly around the Earth and come home safely. It is an inspiring true-based story with strong families and some light swearing. The one age is 18, set by the Catholic classification A-III; Common Sense Media says 10 and the MPAA PG.
For parents
One age: 18, set by the Catholic classification A-III (adults), per the Catholic News Service review reprinted in The Leaven. Common Sense Media says 10+ and the MPAA rating is PG; the CNS reviewer adds that many parents may find it suitable for older teens. CNS lists at least one use of profanity, several milder oaths and a vague sexual reference. Plugged In counts nearly 15 uses of "d--n", about six of "h---" and misuses of God's and Jesus' names; one character gets visibly drunk; a widow shares a passionate kiss with a suitor who later proposes. Plugged In also notes church attendance, grace before dinner and thanks given to God. Wikipedia says some scenes are fictionalized, including the restroom-sign scene. Talk about it: How did Katherine, Mary and Dorothy answer unfair treatment? What does it mean that every person has equal dignity before God?
