Jesus of Nazareth
Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this show for parents.
Our review
For many Catholics this is the face of Jesus they carry in their hearts. Powell's Christ is reverent and otherworldly, and the Annunciation is as beautiful as any ever filmed: Mary's fear, awe, and quiet yes. The Last Supper and Peter's confession are staged with real reverence. One honest reservation: the script turns Judas into a dupe of an invented priest, and the Resurrection ending is thin and hurried.
For parents
Fine for school-age children with a parent; the slaughter of the innocents, an exorcism, and the scourging and crucifixion are intense. Watch it over Holy Week. Ask: what does Mary's yes cost her? Then correct one thing: the Gospels say Judas chose to betray Jesus; nobody tricked him (CCC 597).
