Joan of Arc
Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Ingrid Bergman plays Joan as a girl who obeys God when every sensible voice tells her to go home. The film takes her voices, her mission and her death seriously, and it never treats them as a delusion. The reservation is the craft. It is long, stagey and heavy with talk, and the churchmen who condemn her need explaining to children.
For parents
For ages ten and up. Preview the stake scene, and know that a jailer tries to assault Joan in prison. Explain that a corrupt local court burned her, and the Church later overturned its verdict and canonized her. Ask: how did Joan know what God wanted? Why did she refuse to lie to save her life?
