Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie

2002 · Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki · Animated musical comedy, Scripture story

Recommended. Age: 5+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is the Book of Jonah told with singing vegetables, and the heart of the book survives: God is merciful, and he asks us to be merciful to people we would sooner see punished. It is funny and clean. The one reservation is that jokes, pirates and a talking caterpillar are mixed into Scripture, so read the real book afterward.

For parents

Good for the whole family from about age five. The whale scene may scare very small children. Read the Book of Jonah together afterward and sort out what the film added. Ask: why was Jonah angry that God forgave Nineveh? Who is hard for you to forgive?
