Life of Christ

1958 · Fulton J. Sheen · Spiritual reading; life of Christ

Recommended. Age: 15+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is the Gospel explained by one of the best Catholic preachers of the last century. Sheen keeps one point in front of you from start to finish: Jesus was born to die for us, and the Cross is the reason for everything He said and did. The one reservation is length and density. It is 688 pages of 1950s prose and it rewards slow reading.

For parents

Independent reading from about 15. Read short chapters aloud from 12, especially in Lent. No source logs any troubling content beyond the Passion itself. Ask why Sheen says every other person came into the world to live, but Christ came to die. Ask which temptation in the desert is hardest today.
