Lilies of the Field

1963 · Ralph Nelson · Comedy-drama

Recommended. Age: All ages. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

A stubborn Mother Superior prays for a chapel, and God sends a Baptist with a toolbox. Homer and the sisters clash, laugh, sing and build something for God together. It is warm, funny and full of trust in Providence. The small reservation: a nun quotes Scripture to dodge paying Homer his wages, and some men drink too much. Talk both through with your children.

For parents

Fine for the whole family, best from about seven when the humor lands. Some drinking is shown. Ask: who built the chapel, Homer or God? Was it fair for the sisters not to pay Homer? Explain that Homer is a Baptist, and what Catholics and Baptists share.
