Lincoln

2012 ยท Steven Spielberg ยท Historical drama

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

It is early 1865 and the Civil War is nearly over. President Lincoln wants the Thirteenth Amendment passed to end slavery for good. He must win votes in the House, and the fight is hard. The one age is 18, set by the CNS A-III classification; Common Sense Media says 13+ and the MPAA rating is PG-13. It is a strong, serious film about justice. Parents should talk about winning a good end by questionable means.

For parents

One age: 18, set by the Catholic News Service A-III classification (Common Sense Media says 13+, MPAA PG-13). The CNS reviewer thinks older teens may handle it for its value. Content: bloodless but grim battlefield carnage, a barrel of severed limbs, amputees, Lincoln's body after the shooting, racial slurs, strong profanity including two f-words, drinking, and cigars. Talk about it: Was it right to promise jobs for votes? Is a lie that saves a good cause still a lie? How did Lincoln's patience and humility serve the cause of justice?
