Little Britches: Father and I Were Ranchers

1950 · Ralph Moody · Autobiographical Western memoir

Recommended. Age: 11+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is a true story about a father forming his son's character, one hard lesson at a time. When Ralph does wrong, his father makes him own it and repair it. Mother reads Scripture and prays. The one reservation is the cowboys' talk. Plugged In logs frequent swearing from them, with God's name used in vain.

For parents

Read aloud from 8, skipping the cowboys' swearing, and independent reading from 11 or 12. Good Books for Catholic Kids says 12 to 13. Ask which of Father's lessons Ralph found hardest. Ask why owning up costs Ralph more than hiding it. Father's death is sad for tender children.
