Our review

Cedric is a poor, kind boy living in New York with his mother. One day he learns that he will someday be an English earl, and he goes to live near his grumpy grandfather. Cedric's goodness slowly melts the old man's hard heart. A warm classic about kindness and the duty to care for others, Recommended. Age 10, set by Lumen's own read-alone age.

For parents

Age 10, set by Lumen's own read-alone age (no Common Sense Media book review or publisher age found; Seton lists it for grade 5). Read it aloud from 7. Cedric's father has died before the story begins. The Earl is cold and shuts Cedric's mother out of the family at first. A woman tries to pass off her son as the true heir to take the estate, and she runs away when she is found out. Ask: how did Cedric's trust change his grandfather? What do those with much owe to those with little?
