A Man for All Seasons

1966 ยท Historical drama

Recommended. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is the finest film ever made about a saint. More dies for the papacy and for marriage, and the film never apologizes for him. Paul Scofield shows a man whose conscience is formed by the Church, not against it. One caution: Robert Bolt wrote More as a hero of personal integrity, so name the actual doctrines More died for. Your kids should know them.

For parents

Rated A-I, but it is all dialogue, so best for ages 10 and up. Ask: why would More die rather than sign a paper? What is an oath? Then connect his silence to CCC 1778 on conscience as the voice of God, not of self.
