Our review

Marty is a kind butcher who is shy and lonely. He meets a gentle teacher named Clara, and his friends make fun of her. Marty has to decide if he will be brave and call her. This is a small, true film about seeing a person's worth past looks and gossip. Marty chooses love over the opinion of his crowd, and the film treats marriage as the good it is. The one age is 13, set by the Legion of Decency's A-II. Expect bar talk about picking up women, a glimpse of a racy magazine, lots of smoking and drinking, and a man who admits he once thought of suicide.

For parents

Best for teens and up. The Legion of Decency rated it A-II, which sets the age at 13. Common Sense Media could not be checked. Nothing sexual is shown beyond a rebuffed kiss and a light kiss, but Marty's friends talk crudely about women and leer at a magazine. Talk about that. Ask: why do Marty's friends mock Clara? Why does his mother turn on her? What does Marty see in Clara that the others miss? Marty promises to call Clara after Mass, and the film is set in a Catholic Italian family. A good moment to talk about dating with marriage in mind.
