Mere Christianity
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 15+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Lewis is clear, honest, and hard to argue with on the moral law, on Christ as Lord, and on pride as the great sin. Seton lists it for high school. The reservation is real: Lewis was Anglican and left the Church out on purpose. David Mills in First Things shows why his hall with many rooms does not fit Catholic belief.
For parents
For teens and adults. Read aloud from about 13, independent reading from 15. Keep the Catechism nearby, above all for the chapter on marriage and divorce. Ask: Lewis says Jesus is either Lord or something far worse than a good teacher. Why? Then ask: is the Catholic Church one room in the hall, or the house itself?
