More Perfect than the Moon

2004 · Patricia MacLachlan · Children's historical family story

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A small, warm book about a big thing: a new baby in the family. Cassie's jealousy is real and funny, and it melts when her brother is born and she sees him as a gift. The family is loving, the parents are good, and new life is welcomed with joy. The reservations are light: it is slighter than Sarah, Plain and Tall, and Cassie is rude for a while.

For parents

Read it aloud from 5; a child can read it alone from 7. Kirkus says 8 to 10 for the reading level. It is perfect when a new baby is on the way. Ask Cassie's question: will there be enough love for everyone? Every child is a gift from God (CCC 2378).
