Our review
Sam is a twelve-year-old boy who leaves his crowded New York City home to live alone in the Catskill Mountains. He lives in a hollow tree, finds his own food and trains a falcon named Frightful to hunt. After a year, his family comes to live with him, and he learns he needs people as well as the woods. A wonder-filled nature book, though Sam's running off alone needs a word. Age 10, set by Common Sense Media.
For parents
Age 10, set by Common Sense Media's 10+ rating. Read aloud from 8. Common Sense notes hunters shoot deer near Sam's home, and Sam traps, skins and cooks animals, told without gore. Per Wikipedia, his father only half agreed to his going, and Sam takes his falcon from its nest. Say plainly that a twelve-year-old should not live alone in the woods. Then thank God for the creation Sam learns to love.
