Our review
This is martyrdom as the Church understands it. The monks do not seek death. They choose to stay out of love for their neighbors and fidelity to their vows, and they pray their way to that choice. The last supper scene with wine and Swan Lake is one of the great Last Supper images in cinema. The one reservation: a brief, bloody throat-slitting scene makes this an adult film.
For parents
For older teens and adults; the violence is brief but real. Ask: why did the monks stay when they could have left? Talk about martyrdom as an act of love, not a death wish, and about loving Muslim neighbors without pretending all faiths are the same (CCC 841, 2473).
