Olivia and the Little Way
Recommended. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Here is a modern Catholic girl who wants to be popular and learns to want holiness more. St. Therese is presented as a friend in heaven and a teacher of small sacrifices, with her own words at the head of each chapter. The reservation is small. Olivia disobeys her parents along the way, and one reader notes she is never shown going to Confession. The prose is earnest and plain.
For parents
Read aloud from 8, independent reading from 9 or 10. Best for girls in grades four to six facing the pull of the in crowd. Ask what one little sacrifice could look like at school tomorrow. Ask what Olivia should have done after she disobeyed, and talk about Confession.
