Once Upon a Time Saints

1996 · Ethel Pochocki · Saint stories, read-aloud collection

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

These sixteen tales make holiness sound like the best adventure a person can have. The saints come across as human, lovable and on fire for God, which is the right first impression for a small child. The one reservation is that legend is stitched in without apology, so a child cannot tell which parts are history.

For parents

Read aloud from 4. Independent reading from about 7, in line with Seton's grades 1 to 3. Tell your child these are true saints with some story details added. Ask which saint they would like as a friend, and what that saint gave up for God.
