The Passion of the Christ
Recommended. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
It earns Lumen's highest score for effect on the soul, +10. The flashback cuts between the Last Supper and the crucifixion put the Eucharist-Calvary connection on screen like nothing else in cinema. The violence is the point: Gibson wants you to feel the cost of sin. Adults only.
For parents
Not for children; the ten-minute scourging is among the most brutal scenes ever filmed. For teens 16+ with a parent, pair it with the Passion narratives and the Stations. Ask afterward: why did Gibson keep cutting back to the Last Supper?
