The Passion of Joan of Arc

1928 ยท Silent historical drama

Recommended. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Falconetti's face is the closest cinema has come to showing a soul. Joan is Christ-like in her trial, and the film honors confession and Communion as her true strength. The judges are churchmen, and they are shown as cruel. That is history, and the Church herself overturned the verdict. Tell your teens that part, because the film does not.

For parents

Silent, subtitled, and intense: a burning at the stake and a riot. Best for teens and up, as the A-II rating says. Ask: why did Joan take back her recantation? Explain that a Church court nullified the trial in 1456 and canonized her in 1920.
