Our review

Pollyanna is an orphan girl who goes to live with her strict Aunt Polly in Vermont. She plays the glad game, finding something to be glad about in every trouble, and she cheers up the whole town. When an accident hurts her legs, the town helps her be glad again, and a doctor helps her walk. A warm story about gratitude that needs a talk on real hope and some old, unkind words. Age 9, set by Common Sense Media's 9+.

For parents

Age 9, set by Common Sense Media's 9+ (Lumen's read-alone age is also 9). Read it aloud from 7. Pollyanna is hit by a car and loses the use of her legs for a time. Some editions use a slur for a maid and call Hindu people heathens; say plainly these words are wrong. Ask: what is the difference between being cheerful and having hope in God?
