Rascal
Acceptable. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
Sterling North is a boy in Wisconsin who raises a baby raccoon named Rascal. Sterling misses his mother, who has died, and he spends the year close to his father. When Rascal gets too wild to keep, Sterling lets him go back to the woods. It is a warm, sentimental memoir with nothing to correct. Age 9+, set by Lumen's read-alone age; no Common Sense Media book review or publisher age was found.
For parents
Age 9+, set by Lumen's read-alone age. No Common Sense Media book review, publisher age or Plugged In page was found. Read it aloud from 7. Sterling's mother has died, a brother is away at war, and Wikipedia notes a flu illness and the danger of neighbors shooting Rascal. Ask your child how Sterling showed love by letting Rascal go. This is a good chance to talk about grief and about caring for animals as God's creatures.
