Romero

1989 ยท Biographical drama

Recommended. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

The heart of this film is a shy man made brave by his office and by Christ. Romero rejects Marxism and guerrilla violence, yet will not let anti-communism silence the Gospel's demand for justice. His real homilies carry the film. He dies at the altar, and the film lets that death be a sacrifice joined to the Mass. One honest reservation: the craft is flat and the villains are cardboard.

For parents

For teens and adults; massacres, torture photographs, and a brief nude corpse are graphic. Ask what changed Romero: politics, or his friend's murder and his own prayer? Discuss his line that no soldier must obey an order against God's law (CCC 2242). Name the liberation theology question plainly.
