Saint George and the Dragon

1984 · Margaret Hodges (illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman) · Picture book, legend retold from Spenser

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A knight gets knocked down twice by a dragon and gets up twice. That is the whole lesson, and it is a good one. Hyman's paintings earned the Caldecott. The story works as a picture of the fight against sin and the devil. One reservation: this is Spenser's legend, not the life of the real martyr, and the pictures show blood.

For parents

Read aloud from 5 or 6. Independent reading from about 8, because the text is dense. Preview the dragon pages for a sensitive child. Ask why George gets back up after falling. Ask what dragons we fight every day, and who helps us win.
